Can Areola Pigmentation Be Removed with an IPL Laser?

I had an areola reduction surgery, then used the ipl laser to better the scar marks, during that procedure the laser light faded parts of my areola so now they are not round, if that could take away the pigmentation why did I do the surgery in the first place, I would have just done several laser treatments to reduce the size of the areolas.
