You may want to consider photo dynamic therapy or a laser acne treatment. However the two are not the same. PDT uses multiple wavelengths of energy, whereas lasers use only one.

Good results can be seen with both.  The two therapies can kill bacteria, unblock pores and minimize the production of oil.

However, since lasers only use a single wavelength, there is a higher degree of control and predictability with the results.

Here is an example of a patient who had her acne and acne scars treated with laser

Acne and Isolaz

Please consult a dermatologist who can assess your acne and offer treatment.  You may be a candidate for photodynamic therapy or Isolaz treatment, along with prescription therapy.

Photodynamic Therapy for Acne

Photodynamic Therapy is an effective method of treating active acne and preventing future acne.  A light-sensitizing medication, often aminolevulinic acid, is applied to your skin.  After the medication is absorbed into the follicles of your skin, a light (often blue light) is used to activate the medication.  The result is a decrease is sebaceous gland activity, which leads to less oil production on the skin, and a decrease in the acne-causing p. acnes bacteria on the skin.  Other in-office laser therapies for the treatment of acne that I have found to be very effective are Red & Blue Light Therapy and the Isolaz Acne Treatment.

There is no quick fix for acne, but there are some things that can help a flare -up. Chemical peels and acne facials by an experienced medical aesthetician can be helpful. Cortisone injections can be effective for an inflamed cyst. Usually a combination of oral antibiotics, retin-A, photodynamic therapy, (which uses a combination of medication and laser light), isolaze, and CO2 lasers for scarring are all effective. Even with all these treatment modalities, it will take time to get things under control.

Acne lasers

There is no immediate quick fix for acne.  Often the quickest way to get better is oral antibiotics, injections, creams and a chemical peel.  Even with that, it can take 3-6 months for full effects.  Lasers we use Smoothbeam, Isolaz (light therapy), Photodynamic therapy, and Fraxel for scarring.  These also take months to see full effects.  You need a great Board Certified Dermatologist with lots of acne experience and who owns acne lasers for a good consultation to get a program that works for you.
