Well, I am going to have hernia surgery. I have considered one day having a tummy tuck. While hernia surgery will save my life, I would love to have a tummy tuck as well to rescue my look. Though I can't afford it, I would feel lucky if my surgeon suggested I have a tummy tuck as well. If that is the case, I will find a way to come up with the money. Ha,ha!

Tummy tuck and hernia repair

I prefer to do the tummy tuck and umbilical hernia at the same time. Otherwise if the hernia repair is performed separately the patient oftens up with a mesh repair and a flat belly button, plus whatever problems necessitated the tummy tuck in the first place. It is also more difficult to restore the belly button when is has been disconnected for a mesh repair.

Abdominoplasty and hernia repair can be performed at the same time

Abdominoplasty and hernia repair can generally be performed at the same time, and many plastic surgeons feel comfortable doing both. Some plastic surgeons might ask a general surgeon to perform the hernia repair. Either way, repairing the hernia at the same time is usually ideal as there is excellent exposure for the repair as a result of the tummy tuck portion of the operation. Repair of the hernia likely will not prevent tightening of the abdominal muscles to help achieve as flat an... more

Tummy Tuck and Hernia Repair

Although you did not say what type of hernia you have, any type of abdominal hernia (inguinal, umbilical, or other) can be repaired at the same time as a tummy tuck. Although most Plastic Surgeons can do the hernia repair, many prefer to let a general surgeon do the repair after the initial skin incision and exposure of the hernia. If you want this to happen, you must request it of your surgeon.

Should a hernia repair and tummy tuck be done together

Without more information, it is hard to make a specific recommendation. For one, you didn't mention what type of hernia. The most common is inguinal (groin), which would have little to do with a tummy tuck other than possibly sharing an incision. If it is an umbilical hernia or ventral (in the mid-line of the abdomen) then it makes a lot more sense to do them together. Having one recovery time for both procedures is certainly simpler. Sometimes people in that situation try to get part of... more

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) and Ventral Hernia Repair

In some people, a Ventral (tummy) Hernia repair CAN be done through a Tummy tuck incision. The Plastic surgeon would begin the operation and lift the loose skin off the underlying muscle, exposing the hernia in the process. Depending on his level of comfort (most of Plastic surgeons trained fully as General surgeons) he may then repair the hernia or have a Surgery colleague do it. The Plastic surgeon would then take over and complete the Tummy Tuck flattening the tummy, narrowing the waist,... more

Abdominoplasty and hernia surgery

Hi, if you wish to have an abdominoplasty performed at the same time as your hernia surgery, mention this to your surgeon and ask him or her to recommend a plastic surgeon who could perform the surgery at the same time. Your hernia surgeon will not be able to do the abdominoplasty. The costs for the abdominoplasty will not be covered by your insurance plan, so ask your plastic surgeon to give you a fee breakdown. Good luck, NSN.
