Had tummy tuck two weeks ago. Everything will be fine then all of a sudden the ab muscles tighten (tense) up for hours. Nothing relaxes this you just have to wait it out but it pulls on the lower groin muscles making walking painful. Any idea what causes this and what to do to relieve it?

Why does the pain comes and goes after a few hours after abdominoplasty with miscle plication?

When one gets a muscle plication, the volume inside the abdomen is reduced. After a meal or if gas accumulates in the bowels, the abdominal muscles are under additional tension. There is extra pull on the placating sutures and this can cause additional pain. When the food moves through and the gas is relieved the pain and spasm gets better. Avoid foods that causes flatulence. NSAIDs and pain medication are helpful. Time will take care of this.

Muscle spasms after tummy tucks.

Muscle spasms are very common after tummy tucks or abdominoplasty and are likely caused by local irritation by the muscle tightening or plication of the abdomen. They are usually delayed because your activity is increasing at this point and your are firing these muscles now. Try anti-inflamatories like ibuprofen after discussing it with your plastic surgeon, but this sounds very normal for phase of recovery and likely will improve. I hope this helps. Dr. Trussler

Muscle spasm with Tummy tuck

This is most likely spasm from repositiioning of the muscles. It may take 2-3 weeks to resolve. Valium may ease this but is not necessary. I would encourage you to undertake a Pilates or Yoga regimen to improve muscle tone and the abdominal wall contours.
