Are there any type of abdominal liposuction/liposculpture methods that can cause ventral hernia or diastasis recti? Thanks

Liposuction cannot cause a hernia unless....

1. The only way to cause a hernia with liposuction is to poke a hole through the belly muscles into the abdominal cavity.   2. Diastasis recti is just loose facia of the rectus muscles which causes the belly to bulge out, very common after pregnancy. 3. Sometimes the bulge from diastasis recti becomes more obvious after liposuction of the belly area, but isn't caused by the liposuction.

Abdominal Liposuction Doesn't Cause Diastasis Recti

Liposuction or liposculpture of the abdomen does not cause diastasis (separation) of the rectus muscles. This often results from pregnancy or weight gain. Although a hernia is a theoretical possibility if the abdominal muscle wall is perforated with a liposuction cannula, this is extremely rare when performed correctly. From El Paso.

Liposuction & hernia

Liposuction does not cause a hernia, but by thinning the overlying fat layer, it might make a pre-existing hernia easier to see. Known hernias should be repaired prior to liposuction, to reduce the chance of an injury to the bowel.

Liposuction causing a hernia or diastasis

Unless the liposuction cannula goes through the abdominal wall, a hernia will not happen after liposuction. If the overlying fat is decreased, an already excising hernia or diastasis may be more easy to feel.

Liposuction and Liposculpture do NOT cause hernia or diastasis but may unmask it

Liposuction and Liposculpture do NOT cause hernia or diastasis if properly performed. Theoretically, they could but this would be more commonly associated with concommitant visceral injury. However, reducing the fat layer of the abdominal wall may unmask or make an existing diastasis or hernia more prominent.

Liposuction Doesn't Cause Diastasis Recti

No, there isn’t any type of liposuction that will cause ventral hernia or diastasis recti.  I have never seen a hernia caused by liposuction.

Lipo may be riskier with diastasis

As you can see from the previous replies, liposuction does not cause the separation of the muscles of the abdomen called diastasis; that  is typically from pregnancy. It may be hard to tell if you have a diastasis if there is a layer of fat, so it would become apparent after lipo. However, hernias in the midline of the abdomen are more common when there is a diastasis, and it is possible in that case for the lipo cannula to penetrate into the abdomen which would be a very... more

Liposuction side effects

Liposuction cannot cause diastasis recti, which is separation of the rectus abdominis muscles due to pregnancy or obesity, or any other condition that increases the intra abdominal volume. A ventral hernia may only be caused by liposuction if the cannula penetrates the abdominal fascia during the surgical procedure, creating a defect in the tissue.

Liposuction Causing Ventral Hernia or Diastasis Recti

In my humble opinion no.  There is no cause and effect relationship.  The diastasis and/or hernia should be appreciated prior to surgery or may have unmasked more after surgery.   Dr. ES

Liposuction

I have not heard of diastasis of the rectus abdominus muscle or a hernia being caused by liposuction, especially in awake tumescent liposuction. Perforation of the deeper fascia or muscle is extremely rare and even if this complication occurred it would not necessarily produce a hernia or the diastasis.

It would be unusual to create a fascial defect

In trained hands, it would be unusual for the surgeon to create  a defect in the fascial defect that would lead to a hernia.  The fascia is a tough layer and it would be difficult to puncture.  If someone has a lot of rectus mucle diastases, they would be probably better served with a tummy tuck rather than liposuction.

Liposuction doesn't cause hernias or diastasis.

Liposuction, done correctly, only removes the fat between the skin and the fascia/muscles beneath.  Liposuction does not cause hernias (which are openings in the fascia which let the internal contents of your abdomen poke out) or diastasis ( which is a stretching of the fascia which creates a buldge of your abdomen).  In theory, a liposuction cannula could puncture the fascia, creating a hole which a hernia could form from.  Also possible is the liposuction, as it thinned the... more

Liposuction should not cause ventral hernia or rectus diastasis

Liposuction is a very superficial procedure involving removal of fat beneath the skin and above the muscle of the abdominal wall.  Hernia is a hole in the muscle layer of the belly wall and rectus diastasis is a separation of the two strip muscles running up and down the middle of the abdominal wall.  A procedure that removes fat under the skin should not make a hole in the deeper muscle layer.  There are horror stories of this happening, but it is very unusual, fortunately.... more

Can Abdominal Liposuction/liposculpture Cause Ventral Hernia or Diastasis Recti?

Is it possible YES! But not probable. I have never seen a hernia caused by liposuction. I have heard of the lipo canulae puncturing into the abdominal cavity but a unqualified surgeon. From MIAMI Dr. Darryl J. Blinski

Diastasis or ventral hernia and liposuction

Liposuction removes the fat from above the muscle. The only way it could cause a hernia is if a large canula were inadvertently pushed through the muscle fascia (the strong covering over the muscle separating it from the fat). This would, more than likely, cause an immediate problem from injury of the intraabdominal structures. A diastasis is separation of the rectus muscles from stretch of the fascia by pregnancy or being overweight. It cannot be caused by liposuction, though, by thinning... more

Liposuction and hernias

Liposuction can not cause a diastasis recti of the muscle. This is due to stretching from within( i.e pregnancy or weight gain.)  A hernia can be caused by liposuction if the cannula penetrates the fascia.

Liposuction Does NOT Cause Ventral Hernia or Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti is a Latin term for Separation of the Rectus Abdominis (6 pack) Muscle Muscles. It is caused by progressive pressure from inside the abdomen, as is seen with pregnancy and obesity, which leads to permanent tearing of the midline attachment of the muscles allowing them to be pushed to the sides increasing the size of the abdomen resulting in the "pooch" and pregnant look. A Ventral Hernia is a discrete area of significant weakness of the abdominal wall through which... more

Abdominal liposuction is a safe procedure in the hands of Board Certified trained Plastic Surgeons

There is no reason that  to believe that abdominal liposuction can cause a abdominal hernia or diastasis recti. It is possible that with the removal of fat from the abdomen, that a hernia or a diastasis recti which had been undiagnosed prior to surgery may be more noticeable. However a good preoperative workup should have identified these conditions before hand. There is always the danger of abdominal perforation with liposuction but this is a very unlikely complication in the hand of a... more
