Breast Implants: Q&A

Normal to Get Breast Lift After Breast Implants?

A doctor I seen suggest I get implants followed by a breast lift 6-8 weeks following to allow the implant to settle to get the best results. Is this normal to have two procedures.

This is certainly an acceptable approach

If your surgeon feels the best way to achieve the results you're looking for is to perform an augmentation with a mastopexy (lift), then this can certainly be done in 2 stages. This is a safe approach that reduces the risk of delayed wound healing or even necrosis of the nipple! Whether to perform this procedure as one or two stages is dependent on multiple variables, so I would listen to your surgeon's recommendations, but it sounds like he has your best interest at heart.... more

Breast augmenation and lift: together or lift

This is common recommendation for several reasons. The risk of a revisionary procedure is very high after a single staged procedure. This makes some surgeons prefer a two stage approach which provides a more predictable and controlled environment for healing. In some ways the two procedures are diametrically opposed. In one operation you are tightening and lifting the breast whereas in the second operation you are filling and expanding the breast. These are two entirely different goals... more

Staging breast implants and a lift

Some surgeons like to stage implants and a lift. This is not a bad idea because it allows one to see how the implants settle. I usually do it in a single stage because I find that my patients do not want to go through 2 procedures.

Staged approach is a matter of opinion

Hello, Few surgeons do things that way in my area, but part of for which you pay with a surgeon is his (or her) opinion as to how to best serve you. Maybe get a few more expert opinions.

Two staged approach is not common but not a bad choice in some individuals

A breast lift by itself is a relatively predictable procedure and a breat augment is also relatively predictable. Put these together and it becomes more problematic. There are no right and wrong way to do these procedures. Every surgeon has their comfort level based upon your individual needs. Most patients want and have these procedure done at the same time but in some patients the two staged approach is not a bad idea. It is possible that during your exam there is some anatomic... more

This is acceptable but not preferred.

To ks02, Hi! I do breast lifts together with implants (in one operation) all the time, with very few problems. So do other plastic surgeons who do a lot of breast surgery. Surgical technique is all important, and with good technique, one operation is very safe. And my patients would not put up with going through 2 operations. But this is a controversial question, and in unexperienced hands, there are a lot of complications. So don't try to talk your surgeon into a plan he or she is not... more

Breast Lift after implants can be normal

If done in one or two procedures is basically between the patient and doctor, and specific circumstances. Although I do it both ways, I prefer a two stage approach. My rationale is that it is safer (less risk of tissue loss due to compromise of blood supply), more predictable results. Additionally, when you have a second procedure, it allows the surgeon to correct any imperfections at that time. For the second procedure, I usually wait ~ 6- 9 months to ensure that the implants have... more

Breast lift with implants

Hi there- In addressing any individual patient's goals, many factors are taken into account before a recommendation is made, including the patient's goal for appearance, the patient's examination, the patient's desired recovery experience, and the surgeon's skill set and experience with the options available. If your surgeon felt that your goals would best be accomplished through this technique, and you like him/her, and felt comfortable, you should know that it is a very acceptable... more

Simultaneous augmentation and lift

Every situation, patient, and surgeon is different. Much of the course of action will be determined by what your breast look like pre-op and what you want as a post-op result. Some minor sagging can be camouflaged by choice of technique and style and size of implant. Other breasts may be borderline and the combination of implant and lift may be uncertain. In this case, you should ask yourself what is more important, the shape or the size. If size is a priority, you can choose the implant... more

Lifts and augmentation - separate or simultaneous?

A breast lift tightens the breast and re-shapes it, elevating the nipple areola. An augmentation stretches the tissue adding volume and size. These two diametrically opposing forces can affect would healing negatively and for this reason some surgeons prefer to do the surgeries separately. This is a very conservative approach and there is nothing wrong with it other than having two anesthetics and two recoveries. It is too complicated to discuss all aspects here, but your doctor is only... more
