The implants will be fine

Ralph R. Garramone, MD answers: Will pregnancy ruin my breast implants?

I had breast enlargement surgery 15 months ago, I am pregnant again and am wondering if  this will ruin my breast implants? I had the implant under the muscle but I am worried I will regain that saggy look again.

The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and with breast-feeding will affect your breast tissue itself, and specifically not the breast implant. Whether or not you have breast implants, your breast will undergo changes with pregnancy and breast-feeding that tend to make the breast droop and to lose some fullness, particularly in the upper part of the breast. Those changes will occur whether or not you have breast implants.   There will probably be less of a change in your breast if you have breast implants because the amount of volume that they provide will be constant and will not be subject to the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy and breast-feeding.   I recommend that all of my patients wear a bra, a well supportive underwire bra, after the breast augmentation and for the majority of time after surgery in order to help support the weight of the implant. This is the only way to try to prevent the inevitable stretching of the tissue that occurs with gravity and with age and with the extra weight of the breast implant.
