Tummy Tuck Scar

C. Bob Basu, MD answers: Will I have visible scars from a tummy tuck?

I imagine that you have them hidden below your underpants but is this true? can i wear a bikini after tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a type of contouring procedure, hence the following principle applies: you must accept some degree of scar for the better form.  The good news is that a skilled plastic surgeon can place your scar low in your bikini-line/waist line. After 8-12 months of healing and scar massage therapies, your scar will fade where it will barely be noticeable.

A: I try to leave a scar within the panty or bikini line

Joseph Perlman, MD

When I schedule patients for a tummy tuck, I have them bring a pair of the type of panty they usually wear or a bikini bottom.Using these as  a reference, I then will mark out the incision site so that the final result will be within the panty or bikini. I tell patients that the length of the incision isn't as crucial as the location of the incision. Ideally the scar would heal as a nice thin, barely perceptible line but if the scar ends up moving up or down slightly or is thickened, it can be revised in the office under a local anesthetic.
