Hi!  Of course, I am not saying that you will necessarily get a better result from a more expensive surgeon.  But if people are consistently willing to pay more for someone's work, there is usually a reason.  If a surgeon charges high fees and doesn't get great results, he or she won't be in business very long.

Plastic surgeons are just like other people who work with their eyes and their hands, like artists and craftsmen.  A few are great, most are average (by definition), and a few are terrible.

It's better not to have cosmetic surgery if you cannot afford the best.  Believe me, we see a lot of the bad results. So don't pick the doctor who is going to operate on your EYES because of price.  Look at the results.  Ask to see a lot of before and after pictures.

Many large university hospitals have plastic surgery clinics, where surgeons- in-training operate under supervision.  This is safe and very inexpensive.  In New York City, we train plastic surgery residents and fellows who run a busy clinic at Lenox Hill Hospital.  This is a good option if you cannot afford a top private surgeon.

Costs vary for many tangible and intangible factors:

1. Surgeon's experience.Like a good wine, a surgeon's artistry takes time to mature and more experienced surgeons usually have higher fees.

2.Overhead is an important  factor.Here in the Bronx,my fees are usually lower than  Manhattan or Westchester so that can be passed on to the patient.

3.Degree of difficulty of case . Jane's bleph may be more difficult than Joan's.

4.Are canthoplasties or other lid suspensions involved.?

5.Methods of anesthesia and facility costs.

In the end all these factors go into the decision making mix and must be evaluated  with the most important factor. How comfortable are you with the surgeon?

Actually, it is against the law for doctors to get together and discuss fees, according to our federal government that is price fixing. It is OK for insurance companies to get together and decide what they will pay, but physicians can go to jail for fixing fees.

Each surgeon can set their own fee, I have over 30 years of experience and an expertise you will not get after 2 years of training, so I should charge more. Some doctors have a "Name" and they can charge more.

It is a talent and you can not put a standard price on that.
