Placing breast implants under the muscle helps to hide the edges of the implant especially in women with a thin fat layer under the skin. Saline implants should not be placed over the muscle as the edges may be readily palpable (easily felt) or visible. Silicone implants, with their smoother contours can be placed in either position, under or over the muscle, however placing them under the muscle will conceal them more with thicker tissue therefore giving a more natural appearance. The under the muscle position has also been shown to decrease the rate of capsular contracture.
