It is hard to say that a single type of treatment is the "best," but there is no doubt that of the current treatment modalities to address varicose veins, endovenous techniques are high tech and elegant solutions to a common condition. The crux of the problem with varicose veins usually lies in the major branch (the greater saphenous or lesser saphenous vein) becoming incompetent. This means the "one way" valves of the veins are no longer working properly and allow blood to go backwards in the vein and begin to pool in the legs. "Venous hypertension" occurs, which causes vein branches to enlarge and become tortuous, hence "varicose veins."
In the past, to treat the saphenous veins, ligation and stripping procedures were performed which were inhospital, done under general anesthesia, and were morbid procedures. Now with endvenous procedures, just as Dr. Turowski described, a small laser catheter is placed under ultrasound guidance and can treat the vein from the inside. It is highly effective and excellent long-term data that is equivalent to the "best" techniques of the past.
I have been performing EVLT for a number of years now and have to say that many patients are grateful and satisfied from this procedure. Some have even been able to compare this treatment to a previous vein stripping procedure, and state that there is no comparison between the two.
You will likely find a vein specialist in your area who performs endovenous procedures. Good luck!
