John Philip Di Saia, MD answers: What does a reconstructed breast look like?

How close can breast reconstruction get to creating a breast that looks real? Does it largely depend on how much tissue has been removed?

Hello,

Breast reconstruction can be difficult when a good deal of tissue has been removed and when radiation and chemotherapy have been required to treat the cancer. At times tissue-based reconstructive options require a great deal of surgery to approach a better-looking breast. Implants can be very limited in breast reconstruction.

The results can be good. Not all women are doomed to rock hard implants.
