Gummy bear implants

Robert Frank, MD answers: What are gummy bear implants?

How are gummy bear implants different from silicone gel implants? Are they even available in the US?

The "gummy bear" implant got its name because, like its confectionary counterpart, you can cut a wedge out of one and it retains its shape.

Traditional silicone implants have the consistency of brie cheese...that is to say that if you cut a wedge out of the implant it would gradually "run" out. The gummy bears are more "cohesive" and are, to use the scientfic term, "form stable."

The Mentor version of this device is called the CPG while the Allergan equivalent is called the 410. Neither is available to the general public.

While they might be a good choice for certain patients, I don't think they will be indicated for the majority of patients.
