LIposuction is one way to treat gynecomastia

Steven Wallach, MD answers: Unusual approach to gynecomastia?

I am a 32 year old male who had Liposuction of breasts about a year ago. Also, my surgeon chose to address the gynecomastia through incisions below and medial to my nipples. Is this an unusual approach?

Various techniques can treat gynecomastia depending upon what is needed.  Some patients that have good skin tone and excess fat can have liposuction.  The access sites for the cannulas can vary.  If there is some excess skin and  excess fat, sometimes liposuction can be done alone.  Sometimes a skin excision may be required at the same time or at later time. If there is a lot of excess skin and alot of fat, then more likely an excision of skin and fat is required. If there is a breast bud or glandular tissue that doesn't repsond to liposuction in some of the above situations described, then an open appraoch to remove the fat is required.  Usually this is a small incision along the border of the areola.
