Tummy-tuck, also known as abdominoplasty is the gold standard for treatment of large amounts of loose belly skin. Patients who benefit most are those that have had stretching of the skin due to pregnancy or weight gain and subsequent loss. If the skin is reasonably well toned at the upper half of the abdomen (above the belly button), a mini-tummy tuck may be a good, less extensive (and less expensive) alternative. The mini-tummy tuck is done through a shorter incision and achieves tightening of the skin up to the level of the belly button. If necessary, the lower abdominal muscles can also be tightened, and liposuction of the entire abdomen can be done at the same time. The mini tummy-tuck can be performed as an outpatient procedure under either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Recovery is also easier than with a full abdominoplasy, although even with a mini-tummy tuck one or two drains will be needed for several days. A compression garment (girdle) will need to be worn for several weeks as well.
