Spiral flap usually for weight loss patients

Leonard Lu, MD answers: Spiral flap vs. breast implants?

More magazine has an story: "New help for 'pancake' breasts, which states women with deflated breasts after pregnancy or weight losss can get an operation that is an alternative to breast implants.  It's called "spiral flap" breast lift. Says it costs $30,000.  Can you tell me more about the spiral flap surgery, is it more natural appearing than an implant?

These flaps utilize adjacent excess tissue that might otherwise be removed and transfer them to the breast where implants would otherwise be placed. I agree with what has been said in that most patients who are candidates for this have lost a lot of weight. For most women, implants are the answer for breast augmentation. Good Luck!

The Spiral breast flap is a method of taking your own (autogenous) excess tissue and wrapping it in a spiral to form a cone which is then tucked (augmentation) within a sagging (mastopexy) breast to restore fullness and a yourhful appearance.

This has many implications:

  1. You must have enough excess tissue to use otherwise insuffiencient fullness is the result.
  2. There is a donor site scar which we attempt to hide in the crease scar but it is generally larger than a typical augmentation scar
  3. Tissue rarely "stands up" and over time this will have a tendency to sag and make the lower half of the breast full while leaving the upper portion more tear drop. While this tends to be natural looking, it does not achieve the upper fullness that most women desire when undergoing augmentation or a mastopexy procedure.

I hope this helps!
