Theoretically, small breast reconstructions are the easiest to do. However, this supposes that there is sufficient skin left after the mastectomy. The fact that you are having bilateral mastectomies makes whatever you do for reconstruction easier, provided the same thing is done on both sides during the mastectomy. There can be several reasons for this decision to have bilateral mastectomies. The exact reason will dictate whether the nipple/areola complexes have to be removed or not. If they can be left, this also makes reconstruction easier. Reconstruction, particularly in the latter case, is much easier and with a better result if done at the same time as the breast removal. To decide how to proceed, you should consult with a Plastic Surgeon prior to deciding on what you are going to do. This slight delay will NOT change the course of your cancer.
