Breast settling one week after augmentation

William Bruno, MD answers: Severely depressed by new breast implants

I had breast implants put in a week ago they are 400hp silicone gel.  I was trying to go from a 34A to a 34C cup (under the muscle). I am only 5'7" 115pounds. I look huge and I am severely depressed. I want them out! What should I do...i can't stand how they look.

Breast implants, when placed under the pectoral muscle, will take several months to ultimately "settle" and lower to their natural position. They will also feel quite firm and tense, they will soften considerably over the next several weeks and months. Try and be patient for now and keep all your follow up appointments with your plastic surgeon

Do not consider any re-operation surgery until at least six months from the time of your original surgery.

First of all, it is too soon to judge the final size and form of your augmentation. It may take a few months before swelling is gone, tissues, stretch, and implants settle. During this time, you might become more accustomed to your size and shape. If you are still depressed and cannot tolerate them, then you can down-size, but be quite careful and meticulous about choosing the style, size and dimensions of your implants.

You might also check to see what size you really are in a few weeks keeping in mind the variations in bra sizes and labeling. But if you are pretty close to your stated pre-op goal then that might help you and your surgeon to discuss revisions. A patient's preception of what she wants to be size-wise is not always in sync with what she imagines visually. That is, your target C-cup might always look too big on your frame.

Patients are often unaware that swelling plays a major role in the postoperative course after breast augmentation. It is important to maintain a good rapport with your surgeon and allow the swelling to subside before embarking on any plan for definitive size reduction.
