Reducing a large nose can affect the nostrils

Scott Trimas, MD answers: Will a nose job change the shape of my nostrils?

My concern is that by moving down my hump, the nostrils will expand outward. Is this a real chance of happening?

Reducing a large nose can affect the nostrils. That is an excellent question that you ask. To simply reduce the hump without narrowing the nose or dropping the tip will in itself not have an effect on the position of the nostrils. However, if you drop your tip closer toward your face because your tip also projects outward, then this will indeed widen your nostrils or at a minimum change the angulation of the nostrils with respect toward your face and change from a more vertical position to a more oblique or even more horizontal position. So if you are considering reducing your tip at the same time or bringing it in closer to your face, this could affect nostril position and if it is too wide, your surgeon can narrow it at the same time if it is necessary and many times it is not necessary to do  so. I hope this information helps.
