Ricardo Rodriguez, MD answers: Recommended age for Male breast reduction?

My son is 14 yrs old, he has quite large breasts, he is slightly overweight but his breasts are getting bigger. The surgeon said he has cyst behind his nipple and they need to be removed and he also needs lipo on them. Is this ok for him to proceed at his age? He has never had any surgery nor anesthetic.

If your son is already hiding his breasts from his classmates in the locker room, now is the time. Save him the years of humiliation and self-consciousness.

You are rightly concerned about anesthetic risk, so I would recommend IV sedation. Modern techniques are quite safe, with minimal postop nausea and quick recovery. He won't  "feel a thing", so don't worry about him waking up during surgery if done by an anesthesiologist familiar with IV sedation techniques.
