Why Are Some Surgeons Adamant That 'No One Cares How You Look?'

I've had people tell me in my life that they find me unattractive, wouldn't date me, that my face looks 'dorky', and in general, I've been made fun of very much all because OF MY NOSE. (and they've speficially said this) I am a naturally happy, goal-orientated person, but the inability to go through certain experiances because of the way I look has had a profound effect on my confidence. I indeed have proof that people have 'cared about how I look' way more often than not. Why do some surgeons deny that other people care about how you look

An interesting comment

CSmitty, I don't think that too many plastic surgeons would espouse to "no one cares how you look" comments. The comment that you may be paraphrasing goes more like "it doesn't matter how other people think you look. What matters is how you feel about your look." If you feel uncomfortable with your appearance there are many plastic surgeons that would be willing to help you to change it. Good luck!

The way you look

I am surprised that surgeons are telling you that.  The most important thing is that you find a surgeon that you are comfortable with in terms of communication and understanding of your expectations and wants/needs for surgery.  Good luck.

The Way on Looks

I am not sure which surgeons are telling you that, maybe they are not plastic surgeons. Plastic surgeons are in this business because we are always trying to improve self esteem and the way a person looks. That is the purpose of cosmetic surgery. So, I am not sure who would be telling you this. Anyhow, what does matter most is what you think about your body and face. It is that which is most important. If there are areas that you are no happy with then those are the areas that should... more

I am confused?

What matters is how you feel about yourself. If you have correctable cosmetic defects, and you want them improved, go for it. Who cares what anyone else thinks? So I would ask you- what is it that you want? Perhaps doctors are telling you that you have a perception of yourself that others do not see, could this be possible? If it is, they may not consider you a suitable surgical candidate. Just a consideration.

Most surgeons do care about the way you look

Most surgeons do care about the way you look. The goal of any cosmetic surgery is improvement for the patient and not the physician or for others. If something bothers you about your appearance be it a nose that is too big, too small, or too crooked, then you should certainly do something about it if it bothers you. On the other hand, you should never do surgery because someone else tells you to or they think you should have it done. Having cosmetic surgery done should be your decision if... more

Caring about how we look.

I went into plastic surgery because I was concerned about how others look. I would see a young girl with a hook nose and say to myself it is too bad that she has to look that way. I do not think I know any cosmetic surgeon who is not bothered when they see another person living with a deformity that can be corrected. Obviously, there is a range from mild barely noticeable to severe and that lies with in each of us but I do tend to think that all of us care about what we and others look... more

Do surgeons really say that

I don't know any doctors personally in plastic surgery who would say that nobody cares how you look.  That would be callous and untrue.  If nobody cared, why would we all be doing this anyway?
