The difference is in particle size

Jonathan Hoenig, MD answers: Perlane vs. Restylane, what's the difference?

Before i get to the doctors office for my next appointment i want to know why a company called medicis is selling 2 products called "perlane" and "restylane" even though they are the same ingredients according to the website?  i want to get fuller lips and hide wrinkles.  Which injection, restylane or perlane, do I ask for?

It is true that Restylane and Perlane are the same material made by the same company. The difference between the two is the size of the particles of hyaluronic acid.

Restylane is smaller than Perlane. It is injected into the mid-dermis and is used for moderate wrinkles, lips and I do alot under the eyes.

Perlane is a larger particle and is therefore preferable for deeper folds and larger volume augmentation. It should be injected deeper in the skin (dermis).

A third form called Restylane Touch is even smaller but it has not yet been FDA approved for use in the United States.
