Overfilling during lip augmentation?

I remember several friends in the early ‘90s getting Collagen injections (one had lips done, the other cheeks). biggest complaint: overfilling. Over 10 years later is this still an issue with new dermal fillers like Restylane? I want a lip aumentation but can't afford to hide away as things shrink back to normal-looking.

Things have come a long way since the days of collagen.

For temporary injections, Juvederm and Restylane are fine fillers associated with very low complication rates. Swelling can be a problem post injection, so patients who are not familiar with their body's reaction to the injections should allow 2 days down time. When in doubt, it is wise to start with a less long-acting filler such as Prevelle, which has a much lower incidence of swelling but does not last as long.

We avoid nonapproved semi-permanent fillers for the lips due to chronic granuloma (lump) formation.

For permanent lip augmentation, LiveFill (nontraumatized fascial fat grafts) offer permanent benefits without the prolonged healing time or need to overfill associated with fat injections. LiveFill grafts also do not distort the vermillion border long-term. And, most important, they pass the kiss test.

Overfilling can occur with any type of lip augmentation. The real key is not necessarily overfilling, but filling to a volume that is not harmonious with the face. Since facial characteristics vary, it is important to discuss your aesthetic concerns and goals with your plastic surgeon prior to injection.
