Overfilling in Lip Augmentation ?

Peter A. Aldea, MD answers: Overfilling during lip augmentation?

I remember several friends in the early ‘90s getting Collagen injections (one had lips done, the other cheeks). biggest complaint: overfilling. Over 10 years later is this still an issue with new dermal fillers like Restylane? I want a lip aumentation but can't afford to hide away as things shrink back to normal-looking.

Dear Lisa,

Yes. Times have changed for most Plastic Surgeons. The jokes about Duck or Fish lips and imitations of "The First Wives Club" are no longer applicable.

Except for a few die hard Collagen fans, the vast majority of Americans have lip augmentation using hyaluronic based fillers (Restylane, Juvederm etc).

The basic concept with these fillers is NOT to overfill since "what you see is pretty much what you get". Unlike Collagen these fillers are much better tolerated by most people (no need for skin testing) and last MUCH longer.

Since these fillers last a lot longer than Collagen, you need to use an experienced injector. While several posts on Realself.com tout the potential use, should you need it, of hyaluronidase aka Wydase, an enzyme that breaks up hyaluronic acid, to reduce an OVER-placement of Juvederm/Restylane, it should never have come to that in the lips in the first place.

Pick someone to treat you who likes doing fillers (and preferably who is not too experienced with hyaluronidase use...)
