The Collagen Corporation which first developed Collagen received an FDA a reprimand because they were promoting injections into the lip. This caused them to back off from promoting what was called the Paris lip. Collagen was never supposed to be injected directly into the lip but was to outline the vermilion border between the lip and skin. This is still done today but rarely with the original collagen, Zyderm. Today, either a hyaluronic acid product such as Restylane or Cosmoderm or Cosmoplast is used.
It is true that today we see much better lip augmentation. Not only has hyaluronic acid largely replaced collagen, but most plastic surgeons and dermatologists realize that less is more. The blubber lips, trout pout, and duck bills are much less prevalent today. I have heard the term stripper lips for the large, puffy lips that one occasionally sees, but this is not the aesthetic ideal most of us strive for when we perform lip augmentation.
You should expect some bruising as the lips are very vascular. Fortunately, this swelling subsides in a few days.
Good luck.
