Match your anatomy and aesthetic sense with the implant characteristics

Lavinia Chong, MD answers: What types of breast implants are available in the US?

The last I knew, saline breast implants were my only option since silicone breast implants were banned.  I did hear of some new type of implant that is being used in some Asian countries, but I'm not sure if it's available here.  Does anybody know what options I have for types/materials of breast implants that are FDA approved?

Breast implants are an extremely personal decision, which you should make in conjunction with an experienced board certified Surgeon.

Your choices include: a) Manufacturer: Allergan vs Mentor; b) Saline vs Silicone gel; c) Textured vs Smooth; d) Anatomical (tear drop shaped) vs Round; e) Standard vs Moderate plus vs High profile.  All implant shells are composed of silicone rubber, so it's just the "filler" which differs. Also there has been a lot of anticipation for the so-called "gummy bear" gel implants, which feel firmer than the gels but softer than the saline implants.  The release date for these implants is unknown, at present.

While your surgeon can suggest size, style, fillers, etc.  you should ultimately participate in the selection because you are the ultimate consumer.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.

A: Both Saline and Silicone are available in the US

Silicone breast implants, for cosmetic breast augmentation, were re-approved by the FDA in 2006. Therefore, both saline and silicone implants are available and FDA approved. Please note Mentor and Allergan are the only two companies in the U.S. which are FDA approved. Therefore, make sure your surgeon uses these implants. The only caveat with silicone implants is your age. Currently, the FDA has apporved the use of silicone implants for patients 22 years of age or older. This age limit may drop in the future.
