Many Options For Lip Rejuvenation

D.J. Verret, MD answers: Gortex or silicone implant to augment philtrum?

I would like my philtrum in between my nose and mouth augmented should I use a gortex implant or a silicone implant? What are the risks? It doesn't seem to be a common procedure.

Greetings Sillano,

It is interesting that you are looking at philtral implants. Upper lip aging is a complicated process which involves loss of red show, loss of the natural curves slope of the lip, and loss of the philtral columns. Replacing of the philtral columns can be accomplished with temporary fillers, such as the hyaluronic acid products Juvederm and Restylane, or with permanent implants as you mentioned. You will not find a consensus on which is better. The procedure is not performed often. There is a rather good study in the literature which combined a subnasal lip lift procedure (shown in Dr. Placik's video) with gortex (or more precisely ePTFE) implants. The results are quite nice. I would suggest visiting withe a plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon in your area who understands lip aging and discuss your options.
