Lupus and Breast implants

Pamela B. Rosen, MD answers: Breast augmentation and Liposuction on someone who has SLE and VP shunt?

I've had 3 kids and I've lost a lot of breast tissue and have extra skin. I have also put on 30 lbs and have muffin top, something I'm really not used to. My rheumy says my Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is not active, but I'm still on medications. I also have a VP Shunt that goes from the right side of my head down the right side of my chest to my abdomen. Can I still have breast augmentation and liposuction?

Autoimmune diseases such as Lupus can be exacerbated by any surgical procedure, simply due to the stress placed on the body by the trauma of surgery.  Several years ago concerns arose regarding a possible association between silicone breast implants and auto immune conditions  (SLE, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc) as well as fibromyalgia.  After much media and legal frenzy, that association was never shown to be scientifically valid.  In terms of the V-P shunt, liposuction of the trunk may impact the shunt device which could be a potential problem.  I would advise that prior to contemplating either liposuction or breast augmentation, you have a full evaluation by your rheumatologist, (as well as your neurosurgeon regarding the shunt).
