Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

J. Vicente P. Poblete, MD answers: Liposuction vs. tummy tuck - what's the difference?

I've had 3 kids and definitely need some help in my stomach area, but I'm not sure if I would need liposuction, a tummy tuck, or both to get the pre-baby look I want.

When a patient comes in for a visit, I usually note that there are 3 areas I look at:

  • the amount of skin laxity and excess
  • the amount of fat deposits and where (localized, circumferential) and,
  • the presence or absence of abdomen muscle wall laxity.

Depending on the three, I can usually come up with a recommendations. If the problem is primarily skin excess, tummy tuck may be the better option. On the other hand, if the problem is mainly fat deposits, then liposuction might be better. I use the VASER LipoSelection technique.

Most of the patients will be a candidate for a combination such as a lipo-tummy tuck or a lipo-mini tuck. One must note that during the consultation process, the patient should ask if the doctor can perform all these procedures because it is possible that some perform only one type of operation, therefore, recommending that procedure for "all comers".
