Lasers can improve scars

Elizabeth F. Rostan, MD answers: Recommended scar removal for toes after surgery?

I had surgery for bone spurs on my big toes a year ago and now have noticeable scars on each toe. I think they are like 1/4 inch long and half of that wide. What is the best scar removal procedure for this and what will it cost me to have them removed?

Your scars can be treated with a number of different lasers. A common treatment for scars, especially surgical scars, is the pulsed dye laser (such as the Vbeam). A series of 3-6 Vbeam pulsed dye laser treatments can reduce scar thickness, improve texture and pliability, and fade redness. These treament are easy and have no downtime at all.  Fractional lasers - both ablative as well as non-ablative - can be used to improve scars as well. Sometimes both a pulsed dye laser and a fractional laser are used at the same time to get the best results.

If your scars have some pigmentation or brown discoloration, lasers can also be helpful in lightening the pigment. There are a number of ways to treat hyerpigmentation in a scar. Q-switched lasers (such as are used for tattoos) as well as longer pulse duration alexandrite 755nm lasers can be used to target pigment. There is usually mild crusting after treating a dark area of skin with one of these types of lasers. We commonly use the GentleLase long pulse alexandrite laser (hair removal laser) in my clinic to lighten dark scars both on and off the face. Lighter pigment may be better treated with a tattoo laser.

The cost of these treatments should range from $150 - 350 per treament depending on the laser/s used. Because your scars are small the cost should be low.
