Swelling and contour irregularities six weeks after liposuction

Joel B. Singer, MD answers: Liposuction swelling

I had my saddlebags removed six weeks ago and one of them looks lumpy and looks like if I have something in there that moves. I also had liposuction above my butt, I'm still numb and I now I have a lump. Will this go away? How long does it take for swelling to go away?

It appears from what you are describing that the numbness, swelling and irregularities on the surface are normal consequence of your surgery. If you have specific concerns you should discuss them with your surgeon at your next visit. In most cases, swelling, irregularities, and numbness disappear approximately six months after the procedure. At six weeks there is still a fair amount of edema and interference with normal lymphatic drainage. Often, I recommend drainage massage at this point and ultrasonic treatments to help mobilize the tissues.

My recent experience with Slim Lipo laser assisted liposuction is that there is significantly less swelling and bruising after Slim Lipo when compared to traditional liposuction. This may be due to the fact that the procedure is far less traumatic and that the laser coagulates the smaller blood vessels thereby reducing bruising.
