Rhinoplasty costs vary by difficulty and surgeon experience

Francis Palmer, M.D. answers: How much does rhinoplasty cost?

What are average rhinoplasty cost? Does the price of a nose job vary by state like some other plastic surgeries?

Ahhh...the million dollar question.  What will a Rhinoplasty cost.  No two noses are the same and as such you should expect to be treated as an individual who's requirements are unique.  This means that the fees you'll pay for your Rhinoplasty will vary as well.  However, in my opinion, there are some generalizations.

1. Primary or first time Rhinoplasties will be less expensive then Revision Rhinoplasties that are definitely more work and much more difficult for the plastic and cosmetic surgeon to perform.

2. The more experienced, in general, the Rhinoplasty Surgeon, the higher the cost for your Rhinoplasty.  If the surgeon has a thriving, busy and high profile practice the fees will most likely be higher than if you visited a surgeon who is just starting out.

3. The more difficult the Rhinoplasty: which means the more areas of the nose that need to be manipulated during the procedure...like the tip, upper lateral cartilages, nasal bones , septum and turbinates...onlay grafts, man made grafts, ear cartilage, rib, bone, fascia etc. the higher the cost for your procedure.

I've always advised potential plastic and cosmetic surgery patients, including Rhinoplasty patients to use my simple 4-step guide to selecting your surgeon which can be fould on my surgical website by clicking on "How to Choose Your Plastic Surgeon".

I will leave you with a couple parting thoughts:

1. If a price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Strive for the best, because second best may be a setup for a revision surgery at much higher costs.

A: Factors That Influence Rhinoplasty Costs

Richard W. Fleming, MD

There is no such thing as an average rhinoplasty cost. Many things influence the price. For example:

  • Is the surgery a primary rhinoplasty or a revision of previous work?
  • Is the surgery a minor modification of an unwanted characteristic or a full rhinoplasty?
  • Are grafts needed to give better shape or definition?

Do not shop price! Look for an experienced surgeon with whom you feel comfortable-a surgeon that shares your aesthetic tastes.

A: Rhinoplasty prices vary

Rhinoplasty prices vary widely. Rhinoplasty prices will be higher in cities with a higher cost of living (i.e. NYC, Beverly Hills) and prices will be higher for surgeons with more experience and skill.

I am located in Beverly Hills. Prices here range from about $5000 to $10,000.

When you are quoted a price, be sure to know exactly what is included. Some surgeons may advertise a lower price, but that price may not include such things as anesthesia fees and operating room fees.

A: Rhinoplasty costs can vary tremendously

Just like any procedure, you can find a wide variety of prices.  Rhinoplasty is no different.  You should not use cost as your main factor in selecting a surgeon.  The cost of revision rhinoplasty can run a great deal more.

A good place to start in selecting a plastic surgeon is the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).  Visit the ASAPS website by clicking the link in the yellow ASAPS member logo (above).
