Liposuction cost depends on treatment area

Raffy Karamanoukian, MD answers: How much does liposuction cost?

How much does liposuction surgery usually cost? Do you get discounts for the lipo price if you get lipo on multiple areas?

Liposuction, or suction assisted lipectomy, is a safe procedure when performed in experienced hands. The cost of liposuction depends on three factors:

  • Professional fees per area of treatment
  • Anesthesia type and cost of an anesthesiologist
  • Surgery center fees

I do not compromise on the quality of the surgery center or the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist. These two factors influence the safety of the surgery and the price of the procedure altogether.

A: California Liposculpting Estimates

As you may have guessed, liposuction fees vary a lot and rarely will you get a quote over the phone because so many variables are involved. It depends on the size of the area and the amount of anticipated work to do the job as well as the technique involved. The tumescent technique with micro canulas give by far the best results and are worth the extra cost of the procedure.

Many physicians have not kept up with all the latest improvements happening with liposuction. Twenty years ago we all did liposuction under general anesthesia with bigger canulas which required making incisions and left more waviness and dimpling with saggy skin.  None of that is done anymore by those who specialize in the procedure. If your doc uses general anesthesia or makes incisions which requires suturing, then that tells you that he is doing the old traditional liposuction with the bigger canulas. The procedure is safer with you awake and comfortable.  You just get up and walk out after the procedure. There are no incisions either, only needle sticks now  so no big scars anymore. Recovery is quicker and easier and you are back to work in 2 days  or  less and your skin actually tightens or shrinks.

Here are some estimates:

Neck / jawline liposuction $2500;   Abdomen-upper and lower $5000-6000;  Abdomen with hips and sides $6000-7000; Abdomen with love handles $5000-6000; Inner and outer thighs, knees and buttocks $6000-7000;  inner and outer thighs, lower buttocks, knees, calves and ankles $7000-8000; Midback ,axillae(armpit areas), arms $5000-5500; ADD $750-1000 for operating room fee/ surgery ; There is NO anesthesia fee required.  We want you to have a good experience during your procedure.

A: For What It's Worth, It's Not All About The Cost

With the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery, there has been a flood of medical practitioners of all types into the cosmetic surgery arena in an effort to capitalize on the lucrative market of patients seeking these treatments and willing to pay cash.

Coupled with the general tendency of our society to be a bit overweight as well as fashion-conscious, it is easy to see why body contouring procedures have become the most frequent of all cosmetic surgical procedures performed.  Of the surgical procedures falling under the umbrella of cosmetic surgery, none has been "invaded" more by non Board-Certified plastic surgeons than Liposuction, often with tragic results.

Although in principle, Liposuction appears to be a simple procedure of vacuuming away unwanted fat, there are a number of associated risks that require a careful approach by your surgeon, as well as the ability to recognize and properly treat potential complications.

Many of the ads you see posted under the search term "Liposuction" are posted by doctors with no formal training in plastic surgery, even in some cases by radiologists and family practitioners.  These physicians may have done a weekend course in liposuction, but they do not have the required training and certification in order to obtain hospital privileges to perform these surgeries.
