The effectiveness of a laser hair removal treatment will effect cost

Raffy Karamanoukian, MD answers: How much does laser hair removal cost?

I get a lot of razor bumps on my legs and so I want to try laser hair removal to see if that will fix my problem.  I know it won't be cheap, but what is the cost of laser hair removal?  Is there any way to tell how many laser hair treatments I will probably need before commiting to several treatments up front?

Laser hair removal is considered a safe and clinically effective treatment to permanently reduce or destroy unwanted hair.  It works specifically on the pigment contained in the hair follicle.  In theory and clinica practice, the more pigment and darker the hair shaft and follicle, the more responsive the hair is to laser treatment.

In practice, a laser hair removal treatment will reduce hair density and thickness with each session.  A timely interval between treatments will optimize results. Sporadic treatments spaced at irregular intervals will diminish results.

Factor the cost of each treatment and the experience of your practitioner in treating your specific hair type and skin complexion.  Multiply each treatment by the number of sessions to estimate the cost.  Usually around 4-6 treatments with black or brown hair.

Laser hair removal is effective on all skin types despite many myths to the contrary.

A: Laser Hair Removal Costs

Laser hair removal costs vary and there are many factors that affect the cost.

  • Who's doing the treatment?  Some states require physicians, in other it's estheticians. Obviously, physicians are more expensive.
  • Type of laser used. Some facilities use the same laser for every patient.  If all their patients have the same type of skin, that's ok, but in Los Angeles, there are lots of skin types, which means more lasers and higher costs.
  • Cost of living in the area. Laser hair removal may be cheaper in states with a low cost of living, but this is not necessarily always true.
  • Experience of the practitioner.  More experienced practices are going to charge more.
  • Size of the are being treated. Larger areas mean more time and more expense.

We have found that laser hair removal costs vary from about $200 per hour to $1000 per hour. We recommend finding an experienced practitioner with the right laser for your skin type. If the results are poor, it won't matter what the cost was because you'll end up having to repeat the process again.
