Silicone breast implants may never rupture

Phillip Chang, MD answers: How long before silicone implants risk leakage?

How long can you leave silicone breast implants in before they risk leakage?  Mine are 13 years old and I'm worried that they may start to leak soon.

One of the most frequently asked questions when I am doing a consultation for breast augmentation is how long does the implant last. I tell my patients that although there is no precise time period, most patients will have a second breast operation in about 10 to 15 years (whether it is to perform a lift, to get larger implants, to get smaller implants, or because of rupture). Their breast implants, however, may last forever. I have seen patients with perfectly good implants at 30 years.

They should however also understand that the FDA cites an implant rupture rate of 0.5% at 3 years. Patients with silicone breast implants are therefore recommended to get a screening MRI in 3 years.
