Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure!!

Richard L. Dolsky, MD answers: How does liposuction affect weight loss?

Let me preface this by stating that I know liposuction is not for weight loss. That being said, I am about 20 lbs away from my target weight, and I carry a disproportionate amount of weight in my midsetion. This causes difficulty in finding clothes that fit. My breast/hips are one size and my waist is 1-2 sizes higher. So I'd like to get lipo around my waist and abs now. As I continue to diet and exercise, how do treated versus non-treated areas behave? If I do Vaser or Smartlipo would those area behave differently?

Even when we do a maximum liposuction of 5,000 ml of fat, patients do not experience significant weight loss. The primary goal is body contouring and treatment of disproportionate fat distribution.

The waist and abdomen areas are very easy to reduce by liposuction. If you continue to diet, exercise and lose weight, the surgical result will be enhanced. If you gain weight, it will be more proportionately distributed around the body.

For most patients, good surgical technique and an experienced surgeon are more important than high tech gadgetry. Good surgeons in the 1980's produced fabulous results without the aide of Vaser and SmartLipo. The newest technology will not make an inexperinced doctor into a skillful surgeon.

I used multiple ultrasonic techniques in the 90's and found that they only added to the patient cost and did not improve results.

SmartLipo does have a role in improving skin laxity and treating patients who have loose skin.

A: Liposuction and weight loss

As long as you are going to an experienced, preferably board certified plastic surgeon, for your body sculpting, the technique used is not as important as the surgeon's skills and his evaluation of your goals and expectations and how closely he can realistically get to them.  The end result should be the same.  Although it would be a great motivator to get improvement in your mid-section now, you will get your best results if you are a little closer to your ideal weight.  You are not far from that. Another important factor is the elasticity of your skin in the abdomen and whether the form of liposuction used will help to "shrink" the skin to your new proportions or if you may need some form of skin excision (modified or full abdominoplasty).
