Steven Wallach, MD answers: How can I prevent bruising from Restylane or Juvederm?

whats the secret to minimizing bruises from wrinkle injections like juvederm or restylane? Should I apply ice to the area of injection?

I would say to minimize bruising, you should avoid some things that cause bleeding before  the procedure.  This includes aspirincontaining products  for 2 weeks and NSAID's for at least a week prior to the procedure. At the time of the procedure, ice packs can help minimize bruising.  Also topical agents to anesthetize the skin that contain epinephrine may help as well.  Howver, these things do not eliminate the risk of brusing they only help to minimize it.

  • Don’t take aspirin, Motrin, Advil, or Aleve (ie NSAIDs) at least a week before and a week after injection, as these medications can lead to more bruising.
  • Intermittent icing is recommended for about the first 6-12 hours after injection to help with swelling and possible bruising.
  • Arnica Montana herbals have anecdotally been said to lessen the bruising related to procedures, but I do not typically recommend this to my patients getting Botox.

Unfortunately there is not a text book answer to this question. We ask our patients to avoid aspirin, motrin, aleve products and even some vitamins. There is also a product called Arnica which you take around the time of your injection and this help to minimize any bruising that could occur at the time of injection.

Hi!

1)  Go to an experienced doctor.

2)  For a week before fillers, do not take aspirin or Advil.

3)  Apply ice packs after the injections.
