Gynecomastia, or excess breast tissue in men, can occur for various reasons:
- lack of male sex hormones (testosterone)
- excess female hormones (estrogen)
- pituitary tumor
- drugs or medications
- puberty
- obesity
Gynecomastia can also be a normal variant of a man's anatomy, to various degrees!
It is classifed along a scale from Grade I to Grade III, depending on the amount of excess breast tissue, stretched or hanging skin and droop to the breasts.
Some men feel self-conscious about their breast tissue, and wish to undergo a procedure to reduce the prominence of their breasts.
Gynecomastia reduction usually requires a trip to the operating room, and can involve liposuction, excision of breast tissue, skin and fat, or a combination of these.
Usually some type of compression garment is worn for 6 weeks or more after surgery to encourage skin contraction and a smooth contour to the chest.
