Gynecomastia Usually is Combination of Liposuction and Excision of Tissue

Kent V. Hasen, MD answers: Is gynecomastia surgery just breast liposuction?

Is gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) just a version of liposuction for male breasts?

Gynecomastia is the abnormal production of breast tissue in males.  It is usually seen in combination with additional fat in the breast and surrounding regions.  Liposuction is a great asset in treating this condition. It helps feather the edges and treat the extra fat usually found in the axilla (lateral chest/armpit).  But, I have seen in most cases that despite the technique of liposuction used (standard suction assisted liposuction or ultrasonic liposuction), the thick and dense breast tissue right under the nipple is not adequately treated with liposuction alone.  This then requires a small incision around the lower portion of the areola to definitively remove the remaining disc of breast tissue to get the best possible result in a single stage.  Only in a totally fatty breast with no true area of firm breast tissue under the nipple can I get a great result with liposuction alone.
