Fillers for under eye hollows

Kavita Mariwalla, MD answers: Restylane or Juvederm for genetic tear trough deformity or hollowness?

I’m 24 years old and always have had deep hollowness under my eyes (safe to assume it’s genetic). I’m seeking fillers and have found an ophthalmic surgeon in Los Angeles, but want more options. He asking for $1,500 for 1 syringe, is this average? I’m curious whether it will help with my situation or will it make it bumpy and wrinkly when I smile. Also, should I get Restylane or Juvederm? I had Juvederm in my lips roughly 2 years ago and it went well. I’m extremely scared. Any suggestions/advice will be appreciated.

Improving hollows under the eyes with filler is definitely an option. And a good option - patients do very well if there are hollows. Here is my advice:

1. Ask for before and after photos.
2. Ask how many syringes the physician thinks will be required. In my experience you usually do not need more than 1.
3. Realize that you will have bruising so plan for this procedure when you do not have any big events coming up.
4. Make sure the physician is board certified and injects a lot. Filling tear troughs is an advanced skill. You may want to consider a dermatologist in your area for a second opinion.
5. $1500 for one syringe seems a bit pricey - find out what this includes (is the physician only going to fill below the eyes or also put filler in the brow/upper lid area?)
6. Personally, I like Restylane in this area more than Juvederm - but that is just what I use.

Bottom line: Hollows fill very nicely, but again your result is really going to depend on the experience of your physician.
