Fat Transfer vs. Sculptra

Joel B. Singer, MD answers: Fat Transfer vs Sculptra for cheeks?

Does Fat Transfer work better for small loss of volume in cheeks for a 44 year old or Sculptra injections?

Hi,

I have had considerable experience with fat transfer to the face and obtained excellent results especially when I did it in stages. The reality of fat transfer is that it is a surgical procedure, requires sedation anesthesia, requires a donor site (usually the abdomen), has considerable downtime, bruising and swelling. The results are unpredictable and the results are technique dependent. It is your own tissue and the results can be very long lived and even permanent.

I have used Sculptra for facial volume restoration for the past  three years and feel that it is an excellent alternative to fat transfer. I use topical and block anesthesia, there is little or no bruising or swelling with the newer techniques. There is little or no downtime and no need for a donor site or sedation anesthesia. Scuptra lasts two years or more and can be tweaked every year and a half with maintenance doses.
