Facelift: Appropriate Tension and Vector

Stephen Prendiville, MD answers: How can I avoid getting a pulled up look from a face lift?

anything i should know before getting a face lift so I won't end up looking all pulled up? I think they call it "wind swept" looking? this is NOT the results I want from surgery!

Modern Facelift techniques are typically multiplanar, allowing for repositioning of descended facial tissues.  The direction of pull (vector) of the deeper tissues (SMAS) determines the appearance of the face.  Inappropriate vectors lead to unnatural looks.  Secondly, inappropriate vector with skin re-draping and/or excessive tension on the skin can lead to a stigmatic appearance.  As has been mentioned by others on this topic, the problem is avoidable with appropriate techniques.
