Steven Wallach, M.D. answers: Juvederm for laugh lines and expression lines

My expression and laugh lines bother me. Can Juvederm injections fill these in and still leave me looking natural, not like work was done?

Juvederm is a great product to treat laugh lines.  Anyone of a number of products can do so.  Any of the hyaluronic acids, radiesse, fat injections , artefill, etc...

Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are two types of injectable filler materials derived from hyaluronic acid (HA).

Juvederm Ultra is a lighter material and is used to fill mild lines or grooves as well as to enhance lips.

Juvederm Ultra Plus is made of a heavier material and is better for deeper grooves.  It is also used to restore facial volume that is lost with age, most notably in the midface.

These materials last 6-9 months.  They will last longer in less mobile areas.

Some physicians will use topical anesthetics, a nerve block inside the mouth (similar to the dentist), or a combination fo the two.  Some will mix local anesthetics with the filler material.  In addition, some clinicians will use cold compresses before and after the injection to reduce bruising and swelling.

As long as it is not contraindicated, try to avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs before or after the injection.  This will help minimize the likelihood of bruising associated with the injection.

Be sure to clearly communicate your goals with your physician before the injection.  Only by understanding all of your options will you obtain the knowledge and results you desire.
