Wait 6 months after Accutane before laser skin resurfacing

Brooke R. Seckel, MD answers: Chemical Peel or Laser Resurfacing after Accutane treatments

I am done with the 6-month Accutane treatment, and now I am desperately waiting to get either a Chemical Peel or Laser Resurfacing for severe acne. Which of the two is better, and when can I get started with the treatment?

Dear Hope613,

The best results for correcting Acne scars are now achieved with a new combination laser therapy using first non-ablative then ablative fractional laser resurfacing.

The non-ablative laser treatments go very deep into the skin to ceate new collagen in the depths of the acne scar to plump the scar and fill the scar in from below. If needed the 2940 ablative laser peels the skin surface to remove skin irregularities.

The combination therapy produces the best results.

You will have to wait until you have been off of Accutane for 6 months before any of these treatments including chemical peel, because the Accutane has inhibited the skin cells that will make your new skin after peeling.

The non-ablative treatments I use are called the lux1540 non-ablative fractional erbium laser-you will need 4 treatments scheduled 4-6 weeks apart.

You may be happy with your result after the 4 treatments.

If you want more correction, then I would do one Lux2940 fractional ablative laser resurfacing-this will require 4-7 days of recovery, whereas the non-ablative treatments do not require recovery.

Especially after Accutane therapy, I recommend the above laser treatments because they use the Erbium laser, which results in much faster healing than the CO2 laser, which is used in Fraxel Repair, Deep FX and ActiveFX.
