Can Patients with Fibroadenoma Get Breast Implants?

If a fibroadenoma is proven to be benign is it okay to get breast implants? Or do I have to remove it before getting implants?

Fibrodenoma and augmentation

If you have a biopsyproven fibroadenoma then it is fine to get implants. If you don't have a biopsy, you might want to consider doing ths at the time of augmentation, do a frozen section to confirm it, then proceed with the implants. You should be made aware of the alternatives if the biopsy is proven something other than a fibroadenoma.

Breast implants and fibroadenomas

This is a judgement call and it is reasonable to make sure the tissue has been biopsied and determined to be benign and proceed with a submuscular breast augmentation. Alternatively, you could have the mass entirely excised before the augmentation since it is possible for a needle biopsy which doesn't sample the entire lesion to miss something.

Breast Augmentation and Fibroadenomas

There is no reason why you cannot have breast implants. Fibroadenomas are benign breast masses. However, before considering breast augmentation, I would recommend you visit with a breast surgeon for a work up of your breast mass. Is this biopsy proven to be a benign fibroadenoma? Is additional imaging of the breasts needed. I would get these questions answered first to make sure indeed what you are feeling is benign.

Fibroadenoma and breast implants

There is no reason why you cannot have breast implants. If the fibroadenoma is easily removed at the time of the breast augmentation I would suggest doing that also.

Mammograms and breast augmentation

Yes, a fibroadenoma is a benign (not cancerous) breast tumor. You want to make absolutely sure that the lump in question is indeed a fibroadenoma and the best way is with a biopsy where some or all of the tissue is sent to a pathologist to confirm with a tissue diagnosis. I recommend a baseline mammogram for any patient undergoing a breast augmentation procedure.

Pre- existing breast disese

Yes, this condition is relatively common and many women with implants have coesisting fibroadenomas. It is important that you get a screening mammogram prior to surgery (particularly if older than 35) as a baseline to rule out pre-existing disease. It is also important that you obain a follow-up mammogram to serve as your new post-op mammogram,

If a fibroadenoma is proven to be benign is it okay to get breast implants?

Every woman has "fibroadenomas". They are benign and common. As you pointed out, the KEY is to make sure the tissue is not cancerous. We need not get into HOW this is done. We all know that your likelihood of developing breast cancer is one in 11 (or higher depending on your family history). Since the breasts are cancer prone organs, it is very important to make sure that we do not mask an already present lesion. But- if a benign diagnosis is ascertained, I would not have any... more

Fibroadenoma and breast augmentation

If you have a "clean" bill of health from your mammographer and breast surgeon, you can have breast implants.  Fibroadenomas are fairly common.
