Botox neck lift is expensive and shortlasting

Lavinia Chong, MD answers: Botox neck lift

I read about a Botox neck lift. What is this and does it work? I thought Botox was for frown lines?

A Botox necklift can mean various things.  Firstly, it can be used to make the platysmal bands (the long "cords") which extend vertically from under the chin, inferiorly to the front of the neck.  Secondly, it can be used along the horizontal wrinkles over the neck to diminish the appearance of these wrinkles.  This is an "off-label" use, i.e. not FDA approved, which can have complications, if the injector applies the product too deeply, in which case respiratory paralysis may result.  In my experience, this zone usually requires 12-15units (Allergan Botox) and lasts only 4-6 weeks because the blood flow through the muscle is ample.  So you have to decide whether this is something which is worthwhile for you.  Good luck.
