Consider the so-called “alternatives” to BOTOX. Perhaps the best-known product out there is STRIVECTIN. Klein-Becker, the company that makes the product, slyly asks in its marketing: “Better than BOTOX?” Suggesting that STRIVECTIN must be at least as good. Other companies have piled on to this marketing strategy.
- At best this is confusing to the public. There are now scientific studies that have directly compared StriVectin-SD (Klein-Becker USA, Salt Lake City, UT, USA), DDF Wrinkle Relax (Doctor's Dermatologic Formula, HDS Cosmetics, Inc., Yonkers, NY, USA), and HydroDerm (Hydroderm, Beverly Hills, CA, USA) to BOTOX.
- Are you holding your hat? Surprise: BOTOX is better. The creams were no better at reducing wrinkles between the eyebrows than salt water. The lesson is that there is more than hope in the vial, you just have to pick the right vial.
- By the way, these products do work as moisturizers, very expensive moisturizers. If you are not using a good face and eye cream, this change can make a difference in your appearance. Paying more does not mean getting more. If you are spending $300 for a small jar of moisturizer, do you really think you’ll get your money's worth?
- Recognize that even the best moisturizer is going to make only a small difference-don’t over spend.
- It should be emollient but not so greasy that it causes pimples or makes you look shiny.
- It should not burn or dry your skin or eyes (occurs when there are alcohols or acids in the product) and it should smell pleasant and not medicinal.
- It is always possible to be allergic to an ingredient in any product. If you develop a rash or skin irritation after starting a new product, stop the product and consult your doctor immediately.
Don’t forget your sunscreen!
