20% AHA Lotion Caused Hyperpigmentation

I've been using 20% AHA lotion all over my body to treat my KP and it's been working great with no adverse side affects. I recently decided to put the lotion on my hands over night. The next day the skin peeled off to reveal new smooth skin. I haven't used the lotion since but noticed that the days that followed, the skin on my hands is now darker and snakeskin-like. What caused this to occur and how do I fix it? Please help!!
