Steroids or Implant Removal for Swollen Tip 17 Months After Rhinoplasty?

As u can see, my nose crooks to the left, and it is sooo swollen that I think that it may be scar tissue, and NOT edema! Also, my Medpor implant came loose in my right nostril after only a month, and my doc removed a piece of one (there are two parts to the implant), and said that it should be fine since the nose had healed around it. But the jagged tip HURTS, and I want to know if I can just get the rest of the horizontal implant removed, and will the swelling go down-or will I still look like a moose?

Swelling and pain 17 month after rhinoplasty with Medpor implant

If there is an implant in the nose and it is now swollen, it is an infection until proven otherwise. You do not want to place an injection of steroids into an area where there is a foreign body on the nose. In addition, as long as the skin overlying the area of the nose is not red and there is an impending break down of tissues, antibiotics would also be an acceptable alternative at this point. If this does not subside, the implant will simply have to be removed. It is impossible to say... more

Implants for rhinoplasty

It sounds like you have had quite a recovery period for your rhinoplasty. 17 months is enough time for all of your edema to have subsided. If you are not pleased with your nose you should go see your surgeon to ask them what they felt the next couple of months will bring to the final outcome of your nose. If the implant is still painful it will likely need to be removed. The tip edema may be from infection or scar tissue, or a displaced implant. Only your surgeon will be able to... more

Infected nasal implant.

See an experienced revision rhinoplasty surgeon for a second opinion. From the information you provided, it sounds like you have an infected implant which will need to be removed.

Medpor implant and nose job (rhinoplasty)

If your surgeon has experience with this implant, I would defer to their opinion. However, given the limited information presented here, my advice would be to remove the implant entireley, if possible.

Infected and Displaced Dorsal Nose Implant

Although Medpor implants are porous and allow for in growth of blood vessels and thereby being better integrated by the body than other artificial implants (such as silicone etc), they STILL can become infected. Your clinical description is consistent with infection and near extrusion of the implant (the sharp point you are referring to may poke through the skin soon). The safest course of action is removal of the implant, washing the pocket and a short course of antibiotics. The nose... more

Medpore implant for rhinoplasty

There are two problems present at this point. The more important problem is the persistent swelling and tenderness of your nose. The second problem is the displacement of the implant in the upper part of your nose. The swelling and tenderness in the setting of partial extrusion of the implant one month after surgery is likely due to infection. Unfortunately, implants that are not fashioned from your own body (i.e. your own cartilage or bone), can not tolerate infections and require... more

Medpor Nasal Implant with Pain and Swelling 17 Months Post Rhinoplasty

Hi Chan, With swelling and pain 17 months following rhinoplasty with Medpor implants, your rhinoplasty surgeon should evaluate your nose to determine the best course for you at this point. The physical examination as well as the historical course of the implant and swelling need to be considered. Good luck and be well. Dr. P

Rhinoplasty implant and pain

If you are still having pain from the implant, I would suggest just having it removed at this stage. While thicker skin can sometimes take over a year for all of the edema to resolve, you should not have so much fullness at this stage. This will certainly decrease the size of your nose, but it might also put you back where you started, so you just have to consider that prior to proceeding. Good luck, /nsn.

I removed my Medpor implant on the 10th day post operation it was for (dorsum augmentation) it was looking so nice, but I request the removal form my surgeon (Nice guy) because of the pain and hurt... the surgeon use my ear cartilage instead of artificial (Medpor), after the second operation I asked him and his nurses and the Anesthesia technician about the removal of the implant... they said that it was so easy since the tissue in-growth not completed because of the less of the period... now I'm Happy with my own cartilage... regards,
