15 Months After Rhinoplasty Unresolved Hematoma on Septum?

I’m 15 months post-op ago and developed a hematoma on my septum right after surgery. The hematoma seemed to be going down the first couple months but never completely. I still have a bump on the bridge visible from the profile and facing ahead. Each follow-up visit my doctor tells me that the bump is still soft and will go away. I have not seen improvement in over six months. Is my doctor correct? Is he just blowing me off and doesn’t want to fix? What do I do? Will it develop into scar tissue? Do unresolved hematomas cause infection?

Septal Hematoma after Rhinoplasty

It is unlikely you have a septal hematoma because they are not visible from the exterior and would not last 15 months. Consult with your surgeon or get a second opinion.

Your problem is not a septal hematoma

It is not possible to give you a good answer without seening photographs of yourself before and after your surgery. A septal hematoma causes problems inside the nose with breating at first and later on loss of cartialge. You might have had an abscess (infection) that spread up to the bridge of your nose. My guess is that you have lost some cartilage in your nose and tip support along with it creating issues with the height of the dorsum and appearnce of width. Once again, without... more

Septal Hematoma

A septal hematoma is an acute postoperatoive or postraumatic event that can lead to loss of septal cartilage and eventually nasal collapse. It is not something that typically has a contour effect on the dorsum that is being described.  However, this situation requires further investigation with your surgeon or another experienced rhinoplasty surgeon.

Septal hematoma after Rhinoplasty

A septal hematoma is not something that is seen on the dorsum of the nose.  You may have had a hematoma but now probably have scar tissue.  This is just speculation as we dont have any photos and have not examined you. I recommend seeing a board certified plastic surgeon to evaluate your problem. Good luck.

External swelling is not a septal hematoma

I would agree with the other physicians that the swelling you see if not a septal hematoma.  It is possible to have dorsal fullness after surgery from a number of different factors:  persistent swelling, incomplete lowering of the bone and cartilage, or possibly replacement with soft tissue/scar tissue.  It's possible after surgery that you developed blood or serum under the skin and muscle of the nose, but above the bone and cartilage structure.  Maybe that is... more

Nasal Bridge Deformity 15 Months After Rhinoplasty Not Due to Septal Hematoma

Hi Skylar, Consult with a rhinoplasty specialist to get a second opinion if you have not seen any change in 6 months. Septal hematomas are intra-nasal and not visable externally. The bump on the bridge of your nose is not from a septal hematoma. Good luck and be well. Dr. P
